The smell of spring reminded me of prancing in the woods with my siblings as a child. This was one moment in which I was grateful for my tan trenchcoat, that reached my ankles. I used to get called a serial killer back at home, but I was fairly sure it mostly hid my torn jeans and brightly tie-dyed shirt. The sleeves were long enough to cover the fit-bit on my left hand, still connected to the phone hidden in in one of my pockets. I really hope that I am correctly on the land known as Fraser's ridge, rather than in some place that would have me killed. I pat my left breast pocket, feeling for the e-reader and charging cable. Then I feel for my phone and wallet in my right pocket. They are still there.After going on for some time, I approach what looks like a village surrounding a main house. I am confident that I really am in the past as I see no power lines, TV antenna, or anybody holding a phone. There are some children sitting on the front porch. The one that seems to be the oldest is reading from a picture book. Another is holding a cabbage-patch kid, that reminded me of my mother's favorite doll. The three other children were paying rapt attention, as if they had never seen something like this before. All of the children were dressed like they were Amish. Or in dress typical of the 18th century. Not seeing anybody else around, I approached the children. Hopefully these children would be less aghast about my appearance than an adult might be. Clearing my throat I say, "Can any of you kiddos direct me to a mister or misses Fraser or Mackenzie? I think I have a message for them."It is all I can do to not pull out my phone.

She doesn't like it, but it's familiar enough that she doesn't really mind anymore.By the time she's old enough to do whatever she wants, though, the smell of cigarette is irreversibly associated to one person in her mind.
