Hua Cheng is pulled out of sleep by a disturbance in her wife's breathing. Immediately, she's wide awake. It's easy to see that this dream isn't like last night's, where (upon waking) Xie Lian had bashfully confessed to dreaming of them sharing a kiss. (It must have been some kiss.)No, this is a nightmare. Hua Cheng considers how to proceed. Sometimes Xie Lian will lash out in her sleep at any attempt to wake her, which is fine except that it makes her feel guilty. Other times, the only thing that can wake her is Hua Cheng entering her dream and banishing it by force. Hua Cheng does *not* like invading her wife's mind like that.The dilemma disappears when Xie Lian bolts awake with a gasp. Hua Cheng moves with superhuman speed to avoid their heads colliding, but Xie Lian is faster, grabbing for her as if she's about to disappear."San Niang!" Xie Lian sobs, her fingers digging into Hua Cheng's biceps. She's staring at Hua Cheng's surprised face. "Your—your ashes, they—!""Jiejie," Hua Cheng soothes, wrapping one arm around Xie Lian's waist and bringing the other hand to one of Xie Lian's. "I'm here. I'm okay." With difficulty, she detaches Xie Lian's hand from her arm and presses it to where the chain around her neck disappears into her sleeping robes.Xie Lian clutches at the crystal ring, feeling the shape of it. Her face crumples and she falls into Hua Cheng’s arms. "San Niang," she sobs again, but this time it’s a sob of relief. "How can you trust me with something so precious when my luck is so bad?"Hua Cheng hugs her tight. "To be honest," she says slowly, "I knew about your bad luck, and I took measures. I’d be happy with anything you *wanted* to do to any part of me, but… you’ve been very clear that you want me to be safe, so—Jiejie, what did I say wrong?!"Through a voice choked with tears, Xie Lian exclaims "No, I’m relieved! But for now, just trust me. Go back to sleep."Xie Lian hesitates, then nods. Hua Cheng settles them back into a comfortable position, Xie Lian’s head tucked under her chin. On a whim, she takes a breath, nudging her dead body into an imitation of life. Regular breaths, beating heart, warmth.
