The strike on a residential building in the Asala area killed five people in total, four of them women, two of them Christian, in what Gaza’s Health Ministry logged as another ordinary entry in a dataset the world has agreed to call a ceasefire. Fouad al-Najjar lost his mother and grandmother that morning. “The occupation doesn’t differentiate between a Christian and a Muslim,” he said at the funeral. “It targets Christians before Muslims in Gaza. All of us have lost martyrs.” A day later, a strike on a vehicle in Deir al-Balah killed one person and wounded ten more. On 7 October, the third anniversary of the day this war is dated from, an overnight strike near the Nova festival site killed at least two more, among them Mohamed Tamous, a civil defense volunteer whose job was supposed to be pulling other people’s bodies out, not becoming one.None of this happened outside a ceasefire. It happened inside one, which is the detail that should stop anyone from reaching for the word lightly again. Since the truce took hold on 10 October 2025, Israeli strikes have killed 1,454 Palestinians and wounded 5,090 more, according to figures the UN cited this week. Since October 2023, the toll runs past 74,000 dead and 175,000 wounded, against an enclave the UN itself says is roughly 90 percent destroyed. On 7 October, Israel’s defence minister ordered every crossing into Gaza and the West Bank sealed, marking the anniversary by closing the one thing a besieged population depends on to move anything in or out. On 6 October, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said what the numbers already made obvious: “Last year’s ceasefire brought some relief. But it has yet to deliver security, adequate humanitarian assistance or a credible path to recovery and peace.” He asked for the ceasefire to become permanent, as though permanence were a setting someone forgot to switch on, rather than a condition this occupation has never once intended to deliver.Here is what a ceasefire financed the way this one has been financed actually produces: in September, the Trump administration approved a further $2.8 billion arms sale to Israel, forty thousand one-ton bombs, twenty thousand of them Mk84s and twenty thousand BLU-117s, bringing total US arms approvals since January 2025 to roughly $20 billion. Those bombs do not sit in a depot waiting for a war to officially resume. They are the ordnance a “ceasefire” runs on when the state enforcing it has a weapons pipeline that was never contingent on a truce in the first place. A Christian grandmother and her daughter do not die in an apartment block because a ceasefire collapsed. They die because the thing being called a ceasefire was built to rebrand the killing, not to end it, and because the country supplying the hardware and the country deploying it are, for all practical purposes, running the same ledger.I don’t need anyone reading this to agree with me about what to call it. I need whoever is reading this to look at what sits beneath this week’s roundup and move something real toward it.
