略萨在大与小的视角当中穿梭，并不能分辨出来在这样过程中哪一个人是主角，但是又清楚地知晓每一个人都是主角。即使只有一个章节，只选取了人物生命的几个小时，也能够写得透彻。罗曼将军，之前只是在暗杀参与者的嘴里提到，是一个名字。但用了一章正面讲述他的故事，前四分之三章是一天或者两天，后四分之一章是四个月的折磨。略萨的笔调像新闻记者，开始的时候平淡，正是直白不加修饰的笔调给出了传记、纪录片一样的真实性，使得之后的残酷真实得骇人。不仅有个人，也有政治，但是完全不显得突兀，而是极其自然的转换。有侦探小说式的悬念，但是并不因为故弄玄虚而破坏那种严肃的真实感。一开始便有一条故事线是刺杀公羊，而在另外一章节中的故事线，公羊有好好地活着。同时观看监视器，两个画面终将相遇的两个人——因为一切是真实的历史，而不是担心谜底被揭开的虚构故事。但是，注定相交的两条线，汽车冲撞的瞬间仍然让人手心冒汗——什么时候会相交呢？「公羊」自然是一种意义上的主角。或者，其只能说是一个人物，一个贯穿全书的大背景，一个声音、形象，就像许多人记忆中共享的一段历史，集体记忆。就像疫情，真实地指向每一个人，多尼米加共和国的命运也是如此。略萨操弄时间——或者嘲弄时间，时间在他笔下是异步的。在公羊死后，所有故事线的时间突然变得混乱而激动，故事的风格改变了，略萨巧妙地剪辑不同的轴，把公羊的死放在书的中央。不同的素材以不同的速度播放。公羊死了，但是活在乌拉尼娅的记忆里，以恨的方式。仔细思考，其实略萨写的是一段历史，是一个极大的主题，覆盖了特鲁希略时期以及之后多米尼加的民主化时期，但是竟然用这样的方式来呈现。不停地在透过不同的人的眼睛看到一个人、所有人，不同历史时期的样子。阿古斯丁是除了公羊之外被展示的最多的角色：老了、无法行动的阿古斯丁，乌拉你呀给予中的阿古斯丁，辉煌的、落魄的阿古斯丁，献出女儿的阿古斯丁。@reading #perpetualbooks
